Red Heat & BlazeFire
Aggressive ceramic grain abrasives designed for fast material removal and long life on hard species like oak and maple. Red Heat is our go-to recommendation for high-production flooring crews — cuts faster, lasts longer, generates less heat. BlazeFire offers similar performance at a competitive price point.

Regalite & Bona Blue
Regalite aluminum oxide discs are a reliable mid-range choice for most hardwood species and sander types. Bona Blue edger discs are engineered specifically for Bona's edge sander system — aggressive cut, minimal swirl marks. If you're running a Bona machine, Bona Blue discs are the spec choice for finish-quality edge work.
The Hardwood Sanding Sequence — Start to Finish
Pass 1 — Rough Cut (16–36 Grit)
For floors with existing finish, deep scratches, cupping, or significant wear. 16-grit removes old polyurethane and levels the surface fast. Skip this step only if the floor is already bare and flat — jumping to 40 grit on a finished floor leaves old finish in the grain. On pine or softer species, start at 36 to avoid over-cutting.
Pass 2 — Medium Sanding (40–60 Grit)
Removes the cross-cut scratches from the rough pass and levels the surface for finish sanding. Run diagonal to the first pass to catch any ridges. 60-grit is the sweet spot for most hardwood before moving to finish sanding. This pass determines the quality of everything that follows.
Pass 3 — Finish Sanding (80–100 Grit)
Final drum or orbital pass before stain and finish. 80-grit for floors that will be stained (opens grain for better penetration). 100-grit for floors going to clear finish — finer scratch pattern shows less under polyurethane. Hand-sand or detail-sand any areas the drum couldn't reach.
Edge Work — Match the Sequence
Run your edger through the same grit progression as the drum. A common mistake: rough-cutting the field with 16 then edging with 40 — you'll see the difference in the final stain. Match every pass, every grit. Use triangle and detail pads for corners the edger can't reach.
Species matters. Oak handles aggressive grits well. Maple and cherry are harder and less forgiving. Pine is soft — be conservative. Call us if you're unsure where to start on a non-standard species.

Bona Drifast Stain — 18 Colors, Fast Dry, Consistent Lot to Lot
Bona Drifast is a waterborne stain formulated specifically for hardwood floors — it penetrates the grain, dries in 3 hours for recoating, and delivers consistent color across the full floor without blotching. Unlike oil-based stains, Drifast won't amber over time under polyurethane. Colors available:
Light tones: Natural, Golden Oak, Warm Beige, Liming
Mid tones: Early American, Gunstock, Provincial, Special Walnut, Chestnut, Spice Brown
Dark tones: Dark Walnut, Jacobean, Coffee Brown, Red Chestnut
Grey & contemporary: Driftwood Grey, Silver Grey, Pewter
Black: Ebony
Available in quart and gallon sizes. Consistent color from lot to lot — you can reorder mid-job without worrying about variation. Apply with a flat applicator or lambswool pad at 80–100 grit. For open-grain species (oak, ash), consider grain filling before staining for a cleaner look.

Hardwood Flooring Questions from Contractors
What grit should I start with on a floor with old finish?
For floors with existing polyurethane, oil finish, or wax, start at 16–24 grit with a drum sander to remove the old finish and level the surface. If the finish is very thin or the floor is already mostly bare, 36 grit may be enough for the first pass. On softer species like pine or fir, start at 36 to avoid over-cutting. The edger should match the drum — run the same grit on both to avoid visible lines in the stain. Call us if you're dealing with a non-standard finish (paint, stain-sealed, or water damage) and we'll help you figure out the starting point.
What's the difference between hook-and-loop and PSA edger discs?
Hook-and-loop (Velcro) discs attach to a padded hook-and-loop backer on the sander — easy to swap, good for frequent grit changes. PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) discs use a sticky backing and attach directly to a hard rubber or foam pad — they don't peel off during use and are preferred for high-speed edge work. Confirm your sander's backing type before ordering. Clarke American and Bona edge sanders typically use one or the other — check your machine or call us with the model number.
Do Bona Drifast stains work on all hardwood species?
Yes — Bona Drifast works on oak, maple, cherry, walnut, hickory, ash, pine, and most other domestic hardwoods. Results vary by species. Open-grain species (oak, ash) absorb stain more deeply and show richer color. Tight-grain species (maple, cherry) can blotch — use a conditioner or pre-stain on those before Drifast. Always test in a closet or hidden area before committing to a color on a full floor.
How long do I wait after staining before applying finish?
Bona Drifast is dry to recoat in 3 hours under normal conditions (65–75°F, 40–60% humidity). In cooler or more humid conditions, allow more time — the floor should feel dry to the touch with no transfer when you press a white cloth against it. Never rush the dry time. Applying finish over wet stain causes adhesion failure, bleed-through, and color inconsistency. If you're in a high-humidity environment, run a dehumidifier in the space during and after application.
Do you offer volume pricing on edger discs and sandpaper?
Yes. We discount on case quantities and on 10+ sleeves of the same grit and size. Pricing varies by brand and grit — call (802) 489-0828 for a quote on your specific order. For crews running multiple jobs per week, we can set up an ongoing contractor account with preferred pricing and priority shipping. Email info@fast-prep.com or call to get started.
